Antioxidants are nutrients that protect the body against health-threatening "free radicals”Antioxidants are substances whose presence, in relatively low concentrations, significantly inhibits the rate of oxidation.   They neutralize "free radicals" before they can attack healthy cells and cause damage. There are over 50 degenerative diseases in which "free radicals" are implicated, including cancer and heart disease. Test results have established that when antioxidants were used alongside, the treatments yield far superior recovery results.  Antioxidants are called free radical scavengers.

You surely must have heard or read this word a lot by now.  What with antioxidants being present in everything in every form today - from new age health products to cosmetics!  It is the counter to the process of oxidation. Antioxidants are the substances that tackle these free radicals and control the oxidative stress

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons and promote the end of the ‘electron stealing’ reaction thus preventing the damage to the cells. The best part is that these antioxidant nutrients themselves don’t become free radicals after the donation of the electron because they have the ability to remain stable in either form.

Antioxidants prevent the damage caused by free radicals

Antioxidants are derived from varied sources

Every human being is exposed to oxidative stress due to free radicals that are generated within the body during normal bodily processes.  To neutralize this oxidative stress our body has a store of natural antioxidants present in the form of various secretions such as Albumin, Bilirubin, Estrogen, etc. These are the Natural (physiological) antioxidants that our body uses to fight off the potential damage threat posed by oxidative stress.

Our diets are also a great source of valuable antioxidants.  The natural antioxidants that are synthesized in our bodies may not be always sufficient to take care of the free radicals generated in them.  That is the reason why we need to extract antioxidants from our diet.  Vitamin A, E, C, Calcium and Selenium are few of the nutritional ingredients present in our foodstuff that have antioxidant properties. The amount and efficacy of these antioxidants, present in the food, depends to a large extent on the mode of its cooking/processing. Hence, there is an immense possibility that the food we consume may not sufficiently contain the required antioxidants and nutrition we need!
Why Natural and Dietary Antioxidants Fall Insufficient

We are today living in a world of varied cultures and diets. Food habits differ from person to person for various reasons like environment, availability, likings, situation, affordability, religion etc.  “Developing” world has offered a lot of variety in food. But, unfortunately even the inclusion of these might not provide all the required nutrition to the body in the correct amount. A human body continuously gets exposed to increasing oxidative stress, which in turn generates a number of medical disorders.

We want convenience, rather an easy way in all our eating habits. We don’t have the time to cook fresh meals so we use preserved food that obviously lacks nutritionally. We don’t have time to eat so we choose an inferior but quicker option- fast food. And, we don’t exert ourselves to sufficient levels of physical fitness, which further aggravates the problem.

Today's unhealthy lifestyle is generating a burdensome load of ever increasing free radicals that causes damage of a scale that is more than what our bodies can possibly sustain and repair. Factors like smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, exposure to pollutants and radiations, consumption of drugs and chemicals, etc. associated with modern life style leads to this increased burden. This, in turn, increases the demand of antioxidants in the human body.  The issue is further complicated by the negative impact on our dietary habits due to our "modern" lifestyle. Irregular meals, unbalanced diet, junk food, a shift from coarse grains to refined products, etc. are reducing the intake of essential antioxidants. There is a massive imbalance between the requirement and supply of antioxidants.

This is the main reason why individuals in developing countries require additional antioxidant support from nutritional supplement.

Antioxidant has become a general term.  Truth is, there is antioxidant in most of what we consume;  So, what is important is the type, quality, quantity and combination of nutraceuticals and its power to counter the oxidative stress.  For example, if you need a shirt, and I give you a hand kerchief;  Will that fulfil your requirement? On the other hand, if I sell a bale of cloth, you will end up wasting most of it.   A cloth is a cloth but what you need is just that 2 or 3 meters to stitch a shirt – neither a hand kerchief nor a bale.  This simile stresses the importance of getting the right type, quality, quantity and combination.

Fruits available in the super markets & cold storages today are mostly genetically modified because of their compulsion to make these fruits commercially saleable.  Let’s be frank.  What do we look for when we go to the supermarket to buy a fruit?  Its properties or its looks?  There is no consistency or guarantee in the antioxidant properties of these fruits because there is no control over its source.  MAGNO begins its process even before the seeds are planted and continues till the product reaches your hand.
